15 May Columbia College Chicago & Hilton Chicago Unveil Outdoor Photo Installation

COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHICAGO & HILTON CHICAGO UNVEIL OUTDOOR PHOTO INSTALLATION ON FRIDAY

Columbia College Student Works Installed on Iconic Hotel as Part of Wabash Arts Corridor Initiative

CHICAGO (May 15, 2013) – Columbia College Chicago and the Hilton Chicago unveil the newest addition to the Wabash Arts Corridor, a series of large-scale photographs gracing the exterior of the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave. The unveiling with city and business leaders is scheduled for Friday (May 17) at 4:30 p.m. near the corner of 8th Street and Wabash Avenue, during the college’s annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival.

Students in Columbia College’s fashion photography class worked in partnership with the Global Design Services Team of Hilton Worldwide to develop the initiative. The class, which was led by internationally celebrated fashion photographers John and Andree McArthur, created a series of 17-by-25-foot images to extend the newly redesigned Hilton interior to the exterior of the building, with a fashion-focused editorial feel.

“We are very pleased at the outcome of our collaboration with Columbia College and are thrilled to be one of the first completed projects of the Wabash Arts Corridor,” said Hilton Chicago General Manager, John Wells. “This beautiful installation is something that is sure to please both community residents and our guests visiting Chicago from around the world.”

The Hilton Chicago and Columbia College partnership is part of the newly created Wabash Arts Corridor (WAC), a long-term strategy to transform the empty storefronts, parking lots and vacant land into a dynamic creative thoroughfare as a gateway to the South Loop. Other WAC projects currently in development include the Harrison Gateway, a collaboration with the Chicago Transit Authority to install images and haikus at the Harrison Red Line El Stop; to expand an established Papermaker’s Garden near Wabash and Balbo; and to update the façade of 619 S. Wabash.

“We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg of the Wabash Arts Corridor,” said Mark Kelly, vice president of student affairs, one of the driving forces behind the initiative. “We are working with key stakeholders from the South Loop and City of Chicago to make this project a centerpiece of the new Chicago Cultural Plan. We think we can make the South Loop an important tourist destination in the coming years.”

The unveiling of the photo installation will take place during the 13th annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival, a celebration of the work of Columbia College’s graduating students. The festival features more than 100 different student art exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, multimedia presentations, screenings, readings, dance performances and more.
